The playlist
January 12, 2010My grandpa was extremely organized. He numbered all the discs, took note of every song in every program (of the ones he listened to), put every song on an index card, cross-referenced them, made lists, and so on. The one thing he didn’t do was take any note of what was on the sides he didn’t listen to.
I’ve made note of what is on all the labels and am adding the information he missed. If he were alive today I’m sure he’d have everything in a database and/or a spreadsheet, so that’s what I’ve done. I have not included the individual songs here. It just would have taken up way too much space. But here is the label information for every disc in my collection. A few words of explanation: “OTA stamp” is a rubber stamp that reads “Off-the-air recording for checking purposes only.” I’ve left all the typos and abbreviations as they were. KWK or KK is my grandpa. You’ll notice missing record numbers. Those are discs that were broken over the years. My mom tells me that when my grandpa moved the whole collection in about 1957, he had all the records in the back of his car. He had almost arrived at his new house when a dog ran out in front of him. He slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting it, sending the records in the back seat flying. Quite a few were broken that day. Most of the records are 16″. Records 1001 and 1002 are 10″, and records 1201-1224 are 12″.
My plan for digitizing is just to go in numerical order, since the contents are pretty random. If there is anything in this list that someone thinks is significant, please tell me and I can do it sooner.
